If
you've already learned basic Spanish, are fascinated by Hispanic
and Latin American culture, and want to take your language skills to the next level,
Puerta del Sol is the perfect self-study solution!

Edited
by Jonathan Holland, writer and journalist (The Guardian, Variety,
Condé Nast Traveller, Fodor, AA City Guides) and hosted
by Toni Garrido from Spain and Maria Fernanda Lencina from Argentina, both eminent broadcast journalists, each
bimonthly edition (six issues a year) is an unbeatable combination of entertaining audio,
challenging pedagogy, and fascinating editorial and annotation.
If you think cable television, radio, or the Internet offers the same benefits, consider this: each issue of Puerta del Sol comes on an audio CD/cassette so that you can work on your Spanish while commuting, jogging, walking the dog, or cooking dinner. Just pop the cassette/CD into any standard player and listen as many times as you like! Then you also get a magazine containing a word-for-word printed transcript of the program. Difficult words are highlighted in bold in the text and defined in an extensive (500 entries on average) Spanish-English glossary on the facing pages to the transcript. The glossary also contains explanations of tricky grammatical constructions and guidance on the register and usage of the vocabulary across the Spanish-speaking world. Lastly, fascinating background notes in the back of the booklet give you additional information about the people, places, and issues discussed in the program. There are even URLs for Web sites you can access to get more in-depth information.
If
you're still building fluency in Spanish, you should take advantage
of our optional study supplements and Audio Flash Cards. For the study supplements, our editors have developed a
variety of exercises for home or classroom use. Applicable to all
levels of proficiency, the supplements include listening and postlistening
exercises covering selected segments of the program. Listening exercises
help you zero in on key words and phrases that are critical to understanding
a feature. Postlistening exercises consist of grammar drills and
comprehension exercises. All answers are included. Recorded on compact disc, the Spanish Audio Flash Cards accompany each edition of Puerta del Sol and comprise approximately 100 words and phrases from the program. Native Spanish speakers record these words and pause long enough for you to have an opportunity to repeat them. A spoken English translation follows, so that you can be sure of not just the pronunciation of the words, but their English meanings as well. After all 100 words have been presented, we run through them again, this time speaking the English words first and giving you a chance to say the Spanish word or phrase, so you can check how much you've learned. A listing of the words and their translations is included in the transcript booklet.
